“Kotsia”– Wooden slingshot

March 23, 2022

“Kotsia” (bones from the joint, ankles, mainly from lambs or goats) or how the game was called in Ancient Greece, “pessoi”. “Kotsi” is cube – shaped with 6 sides. Girls usually played with them. Each girl had three “kotsia”. They shuffled them, threw them up and when they fell down, they looked at their positions. Depending on the position, the girls either won points or lost their turn.

Wooden slingshot (wooden “dihali”) was a children’s weapon made of rubber attached to a forked wood. With the slingshot children threw stones at a long distance. It worked as a survival tool, as many children used to kill birds and eat them, as well as a practice tool for shooting in the courtyard. Sometimes, there was a workshop for its construction at school.
